What are Wheel Bases?
A "wheel base" refers to the central component of a force feedback racing wheel setup. It's essentially the core unit that houses the motor and electronics responsible for providing force feedback and steering input to the user.
Steering wheels (or hubs) are connected to a Wheel Base via the Quick Release to allow fast switching of steering wheels. In most cases peripherals as pedals, shifter, handbrake etc. are connected to the wheel base.
The first Fanatec Wheel Base which supported interchangeable Steering Wheels was the ClubSport Wheel Base (V1) released in 2012.
PlayStation compatibility is always provided by the wheel base (not the steering wheel). Any Fanatec product connected to a PlayStation-licensed Wheel Base also becomes compatible.
After the initial success of this new and modular steering wheel system many other wheel bases followed over the next years:
- CSL Elite Wheel Base
- CSL Elite Wheel Base+ (PS4/PS5)
