Do any of the current Fanatec wheel bases have an active fan?
No, all wheel bases in our current range do not have an active fan.
The first-generation Podium Wheel Base DD1 and DD2, introduced in late 2018 to early 2019, used a bespoke outrunner motor. While this motor provided high torque and responsiveness, it also created thermal challenges. The rotor in outrunner motors surrounds the stator, which limits heat dissipation and makes it harder for heat to escape. This required active cooling to manage the heat.
However, with the introduction of the CSL DD, Fanatec moved to a second-generation architecture based on a bespoke inrunner motor. In this design, the rotor spins inside a stationary outer housing, which offers several thermal advantages:
- Heat is generated closer to the outer surface, where it can be more easily dissipated.
- The outer casing acts as a heatsink, directly dissipating heat.
- Cooling paths are shorter and more efficient.
Additionally, FluxBarrier technology was introduced to improve electromagnetic efficiency, further reducing heat generation. As a result, Fanatec’s newer servo bases are designed to operate without an active fan, with the housing itself acting as part of the thermal solution.
